New Bailey – a vibrant riverside setting

The Slate Yard is situated in a new, rapidly developing area of Salford called New Bailey, overlooking the River Irwell. Only a 4 minute walk to Spinningfields, New Bailey is becoming a vibrant riverside setting where people can live, work and play…

A little bit of history
This may come as a surprise, but New Bailey was once home to a prison called New Bayley in the 1820s. The horseshoe-shaped prison was built by Thomas Butterworth Bayley, where the name originates. The prison was home to around 1,000 of Manchester’s criminals, locked up for crimes ranging from burglary and rioting, to less serious offences. Parts of the prison were unearthed in an excavation by archaeologists from the University of Salford in 2015.

The name New Bailey is a play on New Bayley Prison, which eventually moved to a new site at Strangeways.

New Bailey today
New Bailey is part of a £650m regeneration scheme of Salford Central that’s truly breathing new life into the area.

New Bailey has been funded by an organisation created by the government to identify and break through the barriers to institutional investment in order to the reshape the future of our towns and cities.

Work to date has shown that high quality, mixed-use, area-based regeneration schemes like New Bailey provide viable, attractive and worthwhile opportunities for institutional investors in the medium to long term, alongside lasting community benefits and environmental improvements.

With the completion of One New Bailey and the work underway at Two New Bailey, new businesses are being rapidly welcomed to the area. International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has chosen New Bailey as its first UK office outside London.

The vibrant new restaurant and bar Menagerie has brought experiential dining to New Bailey. The venue brings sparkle, spectacle and glamour the minute you step through the door. Guests can indulge in brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks – an extensive menu offers carefully crafted dishes and beautiful bespoke cocktails, all dished up with a warm and welcome service.

What’s to come?
In addition to the office spaces, plans for four new apartment buildings, including a second phase release of The Slate Yard, a 33-storey tower and space on the ground floor for commercial units have all been given the green light to be built, whilst a multi-storey carpark has reached completion.
