Manchester’s top five secret drinking dens

If there’s one thing Manchester has no shortage of it’s great bars. The city centre is jam-packed with all sorts of different drinking dens, serving up everything from craft beers to experimental cocktails and sophisticated wines.

But if you’re looking for somewhere a bit different, exciting and off the beaten track, here are the best secret bars in Manchester to add to your next bar crawl. To find these hidden gems, you just have to know where to look...

1. Cane and Grain, The First Floor Bar

You’ve heard of the well-loved bar Cane and Grain - a typical Northern Quarter style hangout with trendy graffiti and a dishevelled charm. But, have you heard of it’s secret First Floor Bar? We thought not. Behind a large wooden door you’ll uncover a dark cocktail laboratory with luxurious antique interiors that scream American speakeasy. It’s a relaxing, black room hideaway - worlds apart from the lively indie rock, pint-drinking vibes downstairs. Swing by next time you’re in the Northern Quarter.

2. Dusk Til Pawn

This bar is situated in the heart of the Northern Quarter in Stevenson Square, but you wouldn’t know it. Cleverly disguised as the front of an old fashioned pawn shop with neon lights and retro electricals, you’ve probably walked past it plenty of times without ever realising what it was. But don’t be fooled, behind the façade lies a boozy secret; an intimate speakeasy bar with a free jukebox and a loaded cocktail menu. It’s a prohibition-inspired hideout that is well worth a visit.

3. Liars Club

Liars Club describes itself as a “tropical hideaway to take you a million miles away from the gloomy streets of Manchester above”, and it certainly does just that. Don’t be deterred by its dark back alley setting, follow the stairs down and you will discover a colourful underground paradise with exotic island vibes, a stellar music playlist and a cocktail menu that really packs a punch. Take your friends and try The Barrel End sharer cocktail - a huge Caribbean cooler literally served in a barrel! What’s not to love?

4. The Fitzgerald

Ok, so it’s not strictly a ‘secret’ bar, but being tucked away above Rosylee and Hula in Stevenson Square, The Fitzgerald is one of Manchester’s more difficult to find and lesser known drinking dens. This 1920s inspired speakeasy boasts an indulgent drinks menu with innovative and experimental cocktails that are some of the best in the city. Its art deco style and black room interiors create a fantastic ambience and will transport you right back to the glory days of American Prohibition.

5. The Wash House

This next bar is so secretive we’re not even going to reveal where it is. A humble looking laundrette, it’s unassuming to say the least. But trust us, step inside and uncover a speakeasy with lush leather seating, an enticing ambience and cocktails aplenty. To visit you have to find their telephone number and ring up to book a washing machine.

Mysterious, much?! So there you have it, the best hidden bars in Manchester city centre. Next time you’re out in the city centre drop by one of them for a really exciting drinking experience you won’t forget. Cheers to that.
